Road bike sizes and Trek inseam chart

How to Measure Your Inseam

Your cycling inseam is longer than the inseam on your jeans. It takes two minutes and a hardback book.

Measuring cycling inseam with a bookA barefoot person stands against a wall holding a hardback book level between their legs, pressed up as a saddle would sit. A measuring line runs from the floor to the top edge of the book.Inseamfloor → bookLevel book
Measure from the floor to the top edge of the book.
  1. Stand barefoot against a wall with your feet comfortably apart.
  2. Pull a hardback book up between your legs. Spine up, pressed firmly like a saddle, and kept level.
  3. Measure from the floor to the top of the spine. Mark the wall if nobody can hold the tape. Repeat to check that your reading is consistent.

Bike Size Guide

What the numbers on a size chart actually measure, and what to do when you fall between two.

Where bike frame size is measuredSide view of a road bike. The seat tube, from the center of the crank to the top of the seat tube, is highlighted as the frame size. The top tube and the standover height, from the ground to the top tube, are also marked.Frame sizeseat tubeTop tubeStandover
Road frames are sized by seat tube length in cm; mountain frames often in inches or letters.

Between sizes?

Compare reach, stack, and standover clearance on the two frames. Height alone cannot tell you which riding position will feel better. Try both sizes if you can.

Centimeters ↔ letter sizes

Use the brand’s published label rather than translating between centimeters and letters. A medium in one brand may fit differently from a medium in another. Letter sizes are not a universal standard.

Standover

You should be able to stand over the top tube with both feet flat. Your inseam is the number to compare with a bike’s listed standover height.

Does Your Bike Fit?

A size chart gets you close. These are the signs to check on a test ride or on a bike you already own.

Bike that is too smallA rider on a frame that is too small: lots of exposed seatpost, an upright hunched back, sharply bent elbows, and knees coming up close to the handlebars.
Too small
  • Knees come close to the bars
  • Lots of seatpost showing
  • Cramped, hunched back
Bike that is good fitA rider on a frame that fits: a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke, a relaxed bend in the elbows, and a comfortable forward lean.
Good fit
  • Slight knee bend at the bottom
  • Elbows relaxed, not locked
  • Easy reach to the brakes
Bike that is too bigA rider on a frame that is too big: the saddle cannot go low enough so the leg is fully straight and the foot struggles to reach the pedal, and the arms are locked straight to reach the bars.
Too big
  • Legs overreach the pedals
  • Arms locked straight
  • Little or no standover clearance
Checking standover clearanceA rider stands over a road bike with both feet flat on the ground. There is a small gap between the top tube and the rider's crotch, marked as the clearance.Clearancefeet flat
Stand over the top tube with both feet flat. You want a gap, not contact.

Standover first

Before you ride, straddle the bike with both feet flat. If the top tube presses into you, the frame is too big, whatever the chart says.

Then saddle height

Set the saddle so your knee is slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke. If the seatpost can’t go low enough, or needs to stick out past its limit line, try another size.

Then reach

On the bars, your elbows should stay soft and you should reach the brakes without stretching. A stem change can fix a little; it can’t fix a frame that’s a full size off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is height enough to choose a bike size?

Height gives you a starting range. Check your inseam, standover clearance, and the brand’s geometry chart, then try the bike if possible. Riders of the same height can have different leg and torso lengths.

Are bike frame sizes the same across brands?

No. A letter size or frame measurement can describe a different fit across brands and bike types. Compare the specific model’s geometry and official sizing chart.

Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?

Compare both frames rather than choosing by the size label alone. Check reach, stack, and standover clearance. A test ride or bike fit can help you decide which frame suits your proportions and riding position.
